Imam Ali ibn Musa al-Reza (peace be upon him), the eighth Shia Holy Imam and truthful successor of the holy prophet of Islam was born on 11th Zee al-Qa'adah 148 A.H. in the holy city of Madinah.
The infallible Imam was decorated with numerous divine-oriented moral attributes and was well-know and popular among people due to his knowledge and wisdom.
The infallible Imam was divinely entitled 'Al-Reza" which means that Allah Almighty and His holy messenger were deeply pleased with him.
Imam Reza used to stress the need for implementation of justice and resorting to truthfulness and sincerity as a basic pillar human societies.
Due to infallible Imam’s divine-oriented qualities and growing popularity among people, Mamun saw Imam as an obstacle to Abbasid’s brutal rule. Holy Imam was poisoned by Mamun and attained martyrdom on the last day of the month of Safar 203 A.H./ 818 A.D, and was buried in Sanabad area of Toos region
After the burial of Imam Reza, the region was soon transformed into a metropolis city which is now known as the holy city of Mashhad. The shrine of Imam Reza (peace be upon him) in Mashhad is also one of the most extensively visited pilgrimage centers in the world.
