The ceremony was held at Imam Khomeini’s holy mausoleum which is located on southern suburbs of the Iranian capital, Tehran.
The gathering was attended by senior authorities, members of Ayatollah Rafsanjani's bereaved family and people from various walks of life who flocked to the holy site from various areas of the country.
Ayatollah Rafsanjani was among the main aides to the late founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini.
Addressing the ceremony, Seyyed Hassan Khomeini, the grandson of the late founder of the Islamic Republic said that Ayatollah Rasfanjani was a good pupil of Imam Khomeini’s school of thought.
Ayatollah Rafsanjani played an influential role both during the anti-Shah struggles before the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution and afterwards through various stages of the establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The iconic cleric passed away at the age of 82 due to a heart condition. Several Iranian and world figures had expressed condolences over the death of the former president.
President Hassan Rouhani described Rafsanjani’s demise as a “great loss” for Islam, Iran and the Islamic Revolution. The Iranian president said Ayatollah Rafsanjani was among the prominent architects of the Islamic Revolution, and a symbol of “patience, faith and moderation.”
